Aroid Care Basics

Aroids — like Alocasia, Philodendron, and Monstera — are tropical plants that thrive both outdoors and indoors with just a few simple care habits. Follow these guidelines to keep yours healthy and growing beautifully:

☀️ Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Too much direct sun can scorch their leaves, while too little light may slow growth or cause legginess. A spot near a bright window with filtered light is perfect.

💨 Humidity

Aroids naturally grow in humid jungle environments, so they’ll appreciate humidity levels of 60% or higher. Most will adapt to average household humidity once acclimated, but adding a humidifier or grouping plants together can make a big difference.

💧 Watering

Most aroids prefer their soil to dry slightly between waterings — especially Alocasias, which are prone to root rot if left soggy. Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot, then empty any excess. Reduce watering during cooler months when growth slows.

🌡️ Temperature

These tropical plants thrive in warmth. Keep them in a stable environment between 65–85°F and protect them from cold drafts, sudden temperature drops, or air conditioning vents.

🪴 Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining, airy potting mix to keep roots healthy and prevent rot. Aroids do well in a quality cactus or tropical houseplant soil — or mixes like FoxFarm Ocean Forest — with added perlite and orchid bark for extra drainage. Always pot with drainage holes so excess water can escape easily.

⚠️ Pet Safety

Aroids are toxic if ingested by pets or children. Keep them out of reach to avoid accidental chewing.
